WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

Originally invented by doctors as a powerful anti-inflammatory tool, cryotherapy is a quick, noninvasive process that exposes your body to extreme cold of up to -250°F.

This sudden drop in temperature increases circulation and pumps reoxygenated and nutrient enriched blood back into the bloodstream reducing pain & inflammation and alleviating sore muscles. It’s also known to release ‘feel good’ endorphins that help improve sleep, reduce stress, and increase your metabolism.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is Cryotherapy?
    • Originally invented in Japan in 1978 by Dr. Yamauchi for treating inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis, Cryotherapy has been used for years by European healthcare facilities because of its effects on immune, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems. Today, whole body Cryotherapy is internationally recognized as an important restorative treatment for the body and mind.

  • Why should I do Cryotherapy?
    • Cryotherapy has a host of benefits. If you are either i) suffering from an injury or recovering from a surgical procedure ii) an athlete looking to enhance performance and alleviate sore muscles or iii) looking for ways to improve your general health & wellness through improved sleep, reduced stress, and increased metabolism, Cryotherapy could be beneficial for you.

  • How does Cryotherapy work?
    • Cryotherapy is a quick, noninvasive process that exposes your body, or parts of your body, to extreme cold of up to -250°F through the use of liquid nitrogen. CryoChambers, also called CryoCabins or CryoSaunas, are used for whole body Cryotherapy and are aimed at reducing your overall skin temperature to between 40°F and 50°F, while maintaining a healthy core temperature. This sudden drop in temperature signals the brain to go into "fight or flight" mode sending blood flow from your extremities back to your vital organs which may be why you feel a pins and needles sensation in your extremities. When you exit the chamber again and begin warming up, your blood is pumped vigorously back around the body, creating a flushing effect.

This overall enhanced circulation accelerates the body’s natural healing process by increasing the oxygen and nutrient supply into the bloodstream, thereby helping to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and alleviate sore muscles. Cryotherapy can also trigger the nervous system to release endorphins, your body's feel good hormones, as well as improve sleep, reduce stress, and increase metabolism.

  • How is Whole Body Cryotherapy different than local Cryotherapy?
    • Whole Body Cryotherapy triggers a cardiovascular response, pumping your body with re-oxygenated and nutrient enriched blood. This is a systemic response. In other words, your entire system realizes the benefits of reduced pain and inflammation, which can reduce your overall recovery time. Unlike whole body Cryotherapy, local cryotherapy is focused on a specific area of the body.

  • What is the difference between local Cryotherapy and ice packs?
    • Ice packs are a form of local Cryotherapy. However, nitrogen based Cryotherapy units allow you to more effectively cover the entire service area around an injury, reaching areas that typically are not easily accessible. For example, in a shoulder injury, local Cryotherapy would allow you to treat the entire joint area. Cryotherapy also allows you to better control the temperature during the entire icing period.

  • How often should I do Cryotherapy?
    • Everyone's response to Cryotherapy is different, so it depends on how your body reacts. Just as a doctor will tell you it can take 6-8 weeks to recover from an injury or surgery, it depends on how your body responds. If you’re doing Cryotherapy because you have pain in certain areas it may take 4-6 sessions to see signs of change, while others can experience relief after a single session. If your goal is overall health & wellness, you may find that a regular routine works best for you.

As with any new regime, consistency is key and better results will be achieved with regular use.

  • Should I do Cryo before or after I work out?
    • People can perspire up to 10-15 minutes after their workout is done and any level of perspiration puts you at risk for skin irritation or burns. Therefore, we recommend doing Cryotherapy before you workout.

  • What happens during a session?
      1. Check-in: As a first time client, you are asked to provide us with your medical history and sign a waiver.
      2. Change into Wrap / Robe: You may leave your undergarments on (no jewelry or metal ie. Underwire bra). Socks / Slippers / Gloves provided.
      3. Get into CryoCabin: Once you’re in the CryoCabin, you’ll remove your robe / wrap and the session will begin. The technician is present at all times to guide you and answer any questions but they can only see your face.
      4. During the session: You’ll stand in our CryoCabin for up to 3 minutes while the body is enveloped by hyper-cooled air at temperatures up to -250°F. During this time you’ll be in complete contact with your cryotech who will guide you through the session.
      5. After the session: After your session, you’ll exit the CryoCabin. Your body will then gradually warmup.
  • Can anyone do Whole Body Cryotherapy?
    • Most people can tolerate and enjoy the benefits of Cryotherapy. However, you should NOT use whole body Cryotherapy if you have any of the following conditions: pregnancy, hypothyroidism, narrowing of valves, crescent-shaped aorta and mitral valve, chronic disease of the respiratory system, severe hypertension (blood pressure >180/100 mm/Hg), acute or recent myocardial infarction (heart attack- need to be cleared for exercise), unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, acute or recent cerebrovascular disease (stroke- must be cleared for exercise), peripheral arterial occlusive disease, uncontrolled seizures, fever, symptomatic lung disorders, asthma, venous thrombosis, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, claustrophobia, Raynaud’s Syndrome or intolerance to cold, age less than 18 years (parental consent to session needed), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases or incontinence.

  • How often are Cryo Facials recommended?
    • Depends on the objective of the treatment. For example, if the client has acne, we recommend performing a cryo facial 2-3x a week. If a client is using it for maintenance, then 1x / week.

  • How long does a Cryo Facial take? Can I do it more than once a day?
    • The treatment takes between 10-12 minutes. We do not recommend more than 12 minutes, because the body creates moisture to combat cold so excessive cold would lead to a surplus of this moisture which is not good for the skin. More than one treatment a day is NOT recommended.

  • Can I wear make-up or contact lenses during a Cryo Facial?
    • Yes, the treatment can be performed with make-up intact. Contact lenses are fine too. However, NO piercings can be worn in the area where treatment is given and the skin must be completely dry. No open wounds or sweat.

  • What reactions can be expected during and after the Cryo Facial treatment?
    • Redness is common after a single treatment in over 90% of clients. This redness is red blood cells returning to the surface and will subside within 2-3 hours after the treatment is complete.

  • When can I expect to see results from Cryo Facial treatments?
    • After about five sessions in a concentrated 1-2 week, window you will see an improvement in the quality of your skin. The amount of improvement depends on other factors such as age, diet, sun exposure, etc. After 10-12 treatments, you should see a notable difference.

Cryotherapy has been used for decades to treat pain, inflammation, spasms, and mobility. The therapeutic benefits have proved beneficial to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia as well as help with post-surgical recovery. Whole body cryotherapy is a fast, effective way to achieve the benefits of cryotherapy.

Whole body cryotherapy triggers receptors on the surface of the skin which activate a response within our Central Nervous System. The blood vessels in the extremities of our body vasoconstrict shunting blood back to our vital organs (heart/lungs) where the blood is enriched with oxygen, enzymes, and nutrients. As the body rewarms the nutrient-rich blood is pushed back to the extremities. Enriched blood promotes internal organ regeneration, expels toxins from subcutaneous layers, initiates cell renewal processes, triggers replacement of damaged cells and eliminates dead cells from the peripheral tissues. Thus, rejuvenating the body on a cellular level.
